Social Services Assistant

Incumbent serves as an assistant to the Dormitory Manager, providing on-site supervision of students to ensure a safe, healthy atmosphere. Provides input in the planning of dormitory activities of students. Maintains order and discipline among students, observing and recording social behavior patterns to aid in counseling and or placement of students. Documents both positive and negative behavior traits. Schedules, coordinates, and supervises work details, recreational and other group activities including making reservations, acquiring transportation, and other related arrangements and providing information concerning these activities. Assigns individual duties by establishing student work rosters on a rotating basis and ensuring that students adhere to assigned tasks. Provides leadership and direction to students in performing daily housekeeping duties, work details, physical training, recreation, hygiene, etc. Gives practical advice and counsel to students in order to assist in developing work skills. Conducts various dorm meetings during absence of the supervisor to disseminate information to students, and provide guidance in such areas as group living problems. Facilities student group counseling sessions. Meets individually with students to discuss day-to-day problems encountered in residential living. Gives practical advice and counsel to students and proposes solutions to routine problems without imposing personal values. Performs other duties as assigned. The incumbent assists students, peers, and subordinates in understanding the relevance of, and promotes the development of positive social skills among students through modeling appropriate behavior, positive intervention, and positively intervening and teaching appropriate employability skills for workplace success. Participates in the Center Behavioral Management System (BMS) and/or the Student Code of Conduct (SCC) program as necessary to insure proper workplace conduct, appearance and behavior. Sets a positive example as a role model to students by displaying appropriate etiquette, timeliness, and dress. This position requires the selectee to obtain or possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the appropriate Endorsement(s) as required by the mission. This position is a Test Designated Position (TDP) under the Forest Service/Department of Transportation (DOT) Alcohol and Controlled Substances Testing Program. All applicants selected for this position will be required to submit to a pre-employment urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Incumbents of this position will be required to submit to a urinalysis on an ongoing random basis, after appointment as directed. NOTE:
This position is required to work swing shift and night shift when determined by the needs of the Center. You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements. GS-05:
(1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level. Specialized experience is defined as:
Group leader in community or residential recreation program; instructor in a training program for the development of job skills; work that demonstrated the ability to be responsible for and to lead and train members of a job crew; unit leader-monitor-proctor for a dormitory group or a boarding school or other residential facility. -OR Successful completion of 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of subjects directly related to the work of the position; (b) included a major in social behavior, human behavior, or health care or; (c) was supplemented by experience in activities that afforded the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate the skills required by the position. (The supplementary experience may have been gained, for example, in part-time or summer employment, in volunteer social welfare or recreation programs, or in community organizations.). -OR A combination of education and experience listed above. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
